I like Spiderman… so what?
A short film against gender stereotypes
by Federico Micali
Loosely adapted from Giorgia Vezzoli book (Settenove ed.)
written by Serena Mannelli e Federico Micali
starring Emma, Nora, Roma, Giulia
Produced by DNArt The Movie
9’.10’’
Cloe is a six-year-old with a great passion: Spiderman! For her fist day of school, she clearly chose the Spiderman school bag.
Cloe’s discovery of the school (and the world) is stuck, due to the following question: why girls cannot have a favourite superhero? Why when she’s wearing the new school bag everyone (including the shopkeeper) says ”is it for male”?
Cloe’s journey starts from here: the discovery of the existence of two separate worlds, one for boys and one for girls. The differences concern clothes, toys, adverts, cartoons and even the language employed in daily life.
“Why did the teacher say guys behave? How about the girls? Do they not behave?” Cloe wonders. Why if she plays football she’s called a tomboy? Why can she not cut her hair in Mohawk style? Why if she cries they call her sissy? Why in a car advert is there a woman wearing a bra?
The world Cleo describes, seen from a child perspective, seems very strange indeed!
The short film (directed by Micali and inspired by Vezzoli’s book) stood out due to its plain and straightforward language; it is therefore ideal for boy and girl students.
“I like Spiderman … So What”, is distributed by Prem1ere, and it has been projected in many international festivals, receiving awards and accolades such as Grifoni Macedonia and Tokyo Kineko Film Festival.

I like Spiderman… so what?
Cloe is a six-year-old girl who tells her mom stories that she types on the computer. Cloe’s passion is Spiderman. She chooses, for her first of primary school, the school bag of her favourite superhero. Everybody’s reaction though can be summarised in the following annoying statement: “But it’s a male school bag!”
The book covers various topics related to (gender) stereotypes, gender identity and to the challenge students have to face in an increasingly multicultural environment: sexist toys, the perception of homosexual couples, cultural and social diversity, and the glossy world depicted in children’s books.
Giorgia Vezzoli
She’s a poet and writer who deals with communication in the social field. She wrote “I like Spiderman… so what” for the publishing house Settenove, a classic of Italian feminist literature for children, which inspired the 2021 homonymous short film, and “Period Girl”, a novel about menstruation. She wrote “Ti amo in tutti i generi del mondo” (published by Giraldi Editore) – a novel on nonbinary gender – and “Poetry Attack”(published by Interno Libri).

Massimiliano di Lauro
His first picture book (“Mi Primer Viaje”, QOQEditora, 2012) was translated into five languages. He won the Special Jury Award two years in a row, at the Lucca Junior contest, and the award for originality and iconic experimentation at the 2013 Syria Poletti Prize. Among his books: “Cieli bambini” (Secop), “Mamma cerca casa” (Ed. Paoline), “Ago. Storia di un capitano” (Biancoenero).
